Around the Barn - HAY

Thank you so much for your interest in ‘Behind the Scenes’ around my barn, home, and farm. First up…HAY! Hay is probably my least favorite thing about owning horses. Every year the harvest is different…Did it get rained on? Does it have weeds? Is there a shortage because of a drought? Did my grower sell out? Do my horses like it? …the list goes on and on! I store my hay along the walls of my indoor arena. It’s not ideal but it does allow me to store a years worth of hay which is completely worth the inconvenience. It’s always the biggest relief to have a barn full of hay in July.

I do not have pasture so my horses are fed grass hay year-round. They are fed 3x a day in summer and 4x a day in winter. They do get alfalfa pellets in their supplement buckets.

When I go out of town I make every single serving of hay. It makes it easy for the person feeding and I know my horses are getting the correct amount.

Tip of the Day - if you use small bales stand them up on their small end. When you cut the hay twine the flakes will stay stacked and not fall all apart!
